PORTLAND — Diego Valeri scored in the 13th minute and Donovan Ricketts earned his 10th shutout of the season, leading the Portland Timbers to a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Friday night.
Valeri scored for the third straight match as the Timbers (11-5-13) moved one point ahead of the Rapids (12-9-9) for third place in the Western Conference.
On the game’s only scoring play, Rodney Wallace leaped to head a Colorado clearance back toward goal, and Valeri raced onto the loose ball and chipped a shot from 20 yards out over Rapids goalkeeper Clinton Irwin for his eighth goal of the season.
• El Salvador’s soccer federation banned 14 national-team players for life for their role in alleged match-fixing, including games against the United States and Mexico. Among those banned were goalkeepers Miguel Montes and Dagoberto Portillo, Christian Castillo — a former DC United player — and William Osael Romero, who played for Chivas USA.
• Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio was suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions in a game against the New York Red Bulls.
• Tim Bezbatchenko, 31, will leave his job as senior director of player relations and competition for Major League Soccer to take over as Toronto FC’s new general manager.
