BROOKLYN, Mich. —

Tony Stewart's weekend at Michigan International Speedway ended a lot better than it began.

He had to use his backup car after crashing the primary one during Friday's practice, but ended his stay with a fifth-place finish in Sunday's Sprint Cup race.

"It was a good weekend for me, putting us in a hole as far as I did on Friday crashing our primary car," he said. "We really weren't a fifth-place car. But we had some breaks go our way."

Stewart was 21st in the Cup standings after a 15th-place finish at Darlington on May 11 but has since finished seventh, first, fourth and fifth to climb to 10th place.

He qualified the backup No. 14 car for Sunday's race and never led a lap, but avoided the ills that plagued Hendrick Motorsports' entries.

"I think we definitely got a lot of luck there at the end but we'll definitely take it for sure, because we haven't had much of it to this point," Stewart said.
