Lafayette beats American U 80-72, earns No. 2 seed

Tony Johnson scored 22 points and Lafayette shot 57.4 percent from the field in an 80-72 victory over American University on Saturday that wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League tournament.

EASTON, Pa. —

Tony Johnson scored 22 points and Lafayette shot 57.4 percent from the field in an 80-72 victory over American University on Saturday that wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League tournament.

The Leopards (17-14, 10-4) will host Holy Cross in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

Johnson scored 16 points in the second half, when Lafayette picked up its shooting pace to 60 percent (12 of 20) after making 15 of 27 to lead 33-27 at halftime.

The Leopards led by 17 points, 57-40, with 12:16 remaining before the Eagles (10-19, 5-9) narrowed the gap. American University also shot well in the second half, making 17 of 28 (60.7 percent).

Dan Trist scored 15 points, and Seth Hinrichs and Bryce Scott added 14 each for Lafayette.

Daniel Munoz scored 13 points and Stephen Lumpkins and John Schoof had 12 each for the Eagles, who will open the tournament at Army.
