BUTTE, Mont. —

National masters handball champion Bill Peoples has died of injuries suffered in a pedestrian/truck collision in Montana.

Garden City Funeral Home says the 60-year-old Missoula man was run over by a delivery truck on the University of Montana campus in Missoula. A witness told police Peoples waited for the truck's cab to pass and jumped under the trailer.

Investigators say he sustained chest injuries after being crushed by the back tires.

An investigation is under way.

The Montana Standard reports (http://bit.ly/SUWm9K) Peoples, a former Butte resident, was named the University of Montana's outstanding athlete in 1975 and was inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

He won several handball competitions, including seven U.S. national masters doubles titles and one U.S. national masters singles title.
