WINDSOR, England —

Hungary won Olympic gold in canoeing Wednesday, capturing the men's 1,000-meter K-2 in a photo finish by holding off fast-closing Portugal.

Rudolf Dombi and Roland Kokeny became Hungary's first winners of the event. They crossed the line five-hundreths of a second ahead of Fernando Pimenta and Emanuel Silva. Martin Hollstein and Andreas Ihle of Germany took the bronze.

Dombi and Kokeny had struggled against the dominant German pair until beating them for the gold medal at the European championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Buoyed by that victory, they had been the quickest qualifiers for the final by nearly four seconds.

This was the first time Portugal won a a medal in canoe sprint.
