Star power didn't help the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Glitzy designated players David Beckham and Robbie Keane, along with goalkeeper Josh Saunders, returned to the Galaxy's lineup against Sounders FC Sunday night at CenturyLink Field.

It didn't matter against the Sounders, who snapped the Galaxy's five-game unbeaten streak with a 4-0 victory in front of an MLS season-high crowd of 60,908.

The Sounders (10-5-7, 37 points) and Galaxy (10-11-3, 33 points) meet again on Oct. 28 in Los Angeles to finish the MLS regular season.

"It's a statement for ourselves," Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said. "It's us knowing that, 'Hey, here's what we can do. Here's the commitment that we have. This is the potential that we can achieve.' It's about ourselves getting confidence in our ability to take on big games."

In a chippy matchup with two yellow cards and a second-half scrum in front of Seattle's goal, the scoring started early.

Forward Eddie Johnson connected on a beautiful header off an assist from Mauro Rosales in the sixth minute. The ball sailed into the left-corner pocket just out of Saunders' reach.

Six of Johnson's 11 goals this season have been off assists from Rosales.

"Everyone is happy, but at the same time, everyone is tired, too. It doesn't even feel like we won," Johnson said.. "It was hot out there. L.A. is a good team and the tempo was fast ... (but) we're just trying to keep our head down and keep working."

At the break, Beckham approached the officials to discuss some non-calls in the opening half. The real peppering started after halftime.

Forward Fredy Montero scored off a Saunders deflection in the 52nd minute. He and Johnson duplicated their goals in Seattle's 2-0 win over Los Angeles in May.

Midfielder Alex Caskey had the highlight goal in the 61st minute. Saunders slid to save one Sounders attempt as the ball rolled outside the box, Caskey collected it and floated an unlikely, left-footed shot into the right corner pocket of the net. The goal, his first in MLS play, sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Rookie Andy Rose also got his first MLS goal, ending the scoring in the 88th minute.

"It was a very good atmosphere and a very good game," said midfielder Christian Tiffert, who made his MLS debut in the second half for Seattle. "The Galaxy had no chance to score a goal and we created many of them."

Notes

• The crowd was the second-largest for an MLS game in Seattle, topped only by the 64,140 who watched the Sounders beat San Jose 2-1 on Oct. 15, 2011.

• Sounders GK Michael Gspurning picked up his fourth shutout of the season. He played his first home game since May 2 and made his second straight appearance after missing 12 games with a hip injury.

• A moment of silence was held before the match in recognition of the death of Krik Urso, 22, a Columbus Crew midfielder who died this weekend.
