MADRID —

The Formula One test driver who lost her right eye in a training exercise in England earlier this month has been released from a Spanish hospital.

Madrid's La Paz University Hospital said in a statement Thursday that Marussia's Maria de Villota is in good shape overall and had been allowed to leave the center Wednesday.

De Villota, 32, was admitted to La Paz on July 20. In England, she underwent operations for severe head and facial injuries after the July 3 accident in which she crashed into a team truck during a test at an airfield.

La Paz says its doctors had no need to perform brain surgery, adding that De Villota would continue to be monitored by the hospital's brain, eye and plastic surgery specialists.
