SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France —

Scottish golfer Martin Laird has withdrawn from this week's French Open due to the death of his grandfather.

The U.S.-based Laird was to make his first appearance in the event but advised European Tour officials he will not be traveling to Versailles and competing on the National course.

The absence of Laird, ranked 35th, means he will struggle to qualify automatically for the Ryder Cup and to contest the mandatory dozen tournament needed to retain full European Tour membership.
