RIO DE JANEIRO —

The IOC says Rio de Janeiro is making "great strides" in preparations for the 2016 Olympics but warns of tight deadlines and a considerable increase in the amount of work after the London Game.

The IOC coordination commission ended its annual three-day visit on Wednesday, saying Rio officials and local organizers must be prepared to take center stage after Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes receives the Olympic flag in 67 days in London.

Coordination commission leader Nawal El Moutawakel says ensuring the venues are ready is the priority, focusing on the construction of Olympic Park and the Deodoro area. It includes 18 competition venues, the main press center and the International Broadcast Center.
