White Sox manager Guillen defends his closer
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen defended Bobby Jenks and made it clear he still has a job in the ninth inning a night after he blew a save against the Rays.
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen defended Bobby Jenks and made it clear he still has a job in the ninth inning a night after he blew a save against the Rays.
Guillen blasted fans Wednesday for booing Jenks after he allowed two runs in the ninth for a 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
Jenks loaded the bases with no outs then he walked Pat Burrell to force in Jason Bartlett with the tying run. Carlos Pena drove in Evan Longoria with a sacrifice fly to right for Jenks' third blown save of the season in 25 chances.
"It's one obviously that broke our heart but there is nobody in this room that feels worse than him," Guillen said. "All of sudden, people treat him like he was a piece of garbage. The way they treat him is not fair."
Jenks has allowed six runs on 10 hits and four walks in his last five appearances.
On Monday night, Jenks loaded the bases against the Rays before escaping by striking out Bartlett to end the game. On Saturday, he allowed two runs in the ninth before getting his 21st save of the season in a 4-3 win against Baltimore.
"I looked at the video earlier today and there is nothing too serious mechanically that needs to be fixed. It's just a little rut I'm in right now," Jenks said.
Also Wednesday, the White Sox purchased the contract of right-hander Carlos Torres from Triple-A Charlotte so he could make his major league debut against the Rays. He was 6-4 with 2.20 ERA for Charlotte.
Torres is making the start in place of John Danks, who has a blister on his left index finger. Danks will throw a side session on Saturday. If all goes well he will make his next scheduled start against the Twins.
