Gonzaga's Austin Daye will enter name in NBA draft, will not hire agent

Austin Daye, the 6-foot-10 sophomore forward from Gonzaga, will test his readiness for the NBA in the next couple of months, announcing Wednesday he will enter his name in the draft but not hire an agent.

If Daye chooses, he can pull his name by June 16 and return to Gonzaga next year, as long as he doesn't hire an agent. Daye said he would return home to southern California at the end of the school year early in May, work with a personal trainer and then prepare for workouts with NBA teams.

"If a great opportunity presents itself, I might have to [follow] that path," Daye said in a statement released by the school.

Daye was Gonzaga's third-leading scorer at 12.7 points, and he had 6.8 rebounds a game and 2.1 blocks.

One website, NBAdraft.net, puts Daye only at No. 36 overall (second round) in the 2010 draft. But another, Draftexpress.com, pegs him 25th in this year's draft.

Daye is slender and widely considered suspect physically right now, and with a 0.51 assist-to-turnover ratio, needs to improve his ball-handling skills. But he has ample mid- and long-range shooting ability and demonstrated quickness off his feet in shot-blocking. Gonzaga coaches also tried to get him to overcome shows of emotion when he committed fouls or missed shots.

"Obviously, we'd like to see Austin in a Gonzaga uniform next year," said Zags coach Mark Few. "I don't begrudge anybody taking a look at their future. I'm confident he'll make an informed, educated decision."
