Getting to know ...

Quinton Richardson, cornerback

Year: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Seattle (O'Dea)

Major: Communications. Would like to go into broadcasting. "I've always seen myself sitting next to John Madden. It's like a childhood dream to be sitting next to John Madden, commentating the game."

You moved in the spring from safety to cornerback, where you are now listed as a starter. Do you like the move? "I like it a lot. I felt it would be better for myself and the team. Just a better look. I feel like cornerback is easier for me. I like going against wide receivers. Safety was kind of hard for me — too many things to read. So this was a better look."

You mentioned Madden — ever play any of the video games that have the Huskies in them? "I've been playing with NCAA 09. They've got me starting at safety and with my old number, 45 (he's now 28). But I haven't been playing safety for a while now, so I guess he [the video-game version of himself] is better."

WHAT HAPPENED: The Huskies held one practice in the afternoon. The practice, expected to be a scrimmage with officials, was closed to the media.

SETTING THE LINEUP: Coaches said they hoped to begin making final determinations on the depth chart.

Of most intrigue on offense is running back, where freshman Chris Polk has appeared to jump ahead of sophomore Brandon Johnson, who has struggled with injuries. But UW offensive coordinator Tim Lappano said that no matter who wins the job "it'll still be a little bit by committee."

Same holds true at receiver, where coaches continue to say that almost all the listed players have a chance at playing time (one exception could be true freshman Vince Taylor, who arrived late and looks to be headed to a redshirt season).

The defensive line, other than DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, also remains somewhat unsettled, but that's partly by design. New defensive coordinator Ed Donatell plans to rotate players up front. As many as 10 could see regular action.

The placekicking job remains a three-man battle among incumbent Ryan Perkins, punter Jared Ballman and redshirt freshman Erik Folk.

GARCIA TO TEST IT: C Juan Garcia planned to use Thursday's practice as a final test of his foot.

"Today I'm going to push it a lot," he said before practice, saying he hoped to play for 4-5 plays in a row instead of just one or two. "I'm going to go through it and see if it holds."

If it does, then he says he can envision himself playing a big role in UW's opener at Oregon.

WHAT'S NEXT: Huskies scheduled for two practices today, their final two-a-day of camp.
