Mariners trade Cha Seung Baek for Padres' Jared Wells
The Mariners cut ties with right-hander Cha Seung Baek, trading the right-hander to the San Diego Padres for another right-hander, Jared Wells. Wells, 26, was assigned to Class AAA Tacoma.
Seattle Times staff reporter
The Mariners traded Cha Seung Baek to the San Diego Padres for right-hander Jared Wells, as expected.
Wells, 26, was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma. He had pitched in relief in two games for the Padres this season.
Wells is a former quarterback, at East Texas Baptist University. Before Wells became a reliever, he was a starter. Going into spring training 15 months ago, he was still one of the highest-rated prospects in San Diego's system.
Baek had been designated for assignment on May 21, which gave the Mariners 10 days to trade, release or assign Baek to the minors.
