WSU to hire June Daugherty

June Daugherty will be announced as the women's basketball coach at Washington State on Friday, according to a source at WSU.

Seattle Times staff reporter

June Daugherty will be announced as the women's basketball coach at Washington State on Friday, according to a source at WSU.

Daugherty, 50, was fired March 18 after 11 years as Washington's coach. She had a 191-139 overall record and a 113-85 mark in league play. Six of her teams advanced to the NCAA tournament, including this year's team that lost in the first round to Iowa State.

Daugherty replaces Sherri Murrell, 39, who resigned April 6 after five years with a 27-114 overall record and an 8-82 mark in the Pac-10.

Washington State was 5-24 overall and 1-17 in Pac-10 play this past season.

The Cougars haven't had a winning record in women's basketball since the 1995-96 season when they went 17-12 under Harold Rhodes.

Daugherty was fired by UW athletic director Todd Turner, who cited a lack of "buzz" in the program, declining attendance and failure to recruit in-state standouts.

Former Duke assistant Tia Jackson, 34, has replaced Daugherty at Washington.

Daugherty's WSU staff is expected to include her husband, Mike, who was on her Washington staff.
