Washington women's basketball coach June Daugherty telephoned each of her players today to tell them her contract, which expires at the end of the month, will not be renewed and she will be leaving after 11 seasons.

"It came as a shock definitely," said Erica Schelly, a fifth-year senior. "It had to have been a hard phone call to make."

Washington scheduled a telephone news conference at 4 p.m. to announce the decision.

Washington ended its season with a loss to Iowa State on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It marked the sixth time the Huskies had gone to the tournament in Daugherty's 11 seasons.

"There have been rumors about this kind of thing all year," Schelly said. "And I think that's definitely been unfortunate.I've been through every emotion with June and to hear her tell me she isn't coming back was really hard. Really, really painful.

Daugherty, whose record at UW was 191-139, never got the city or the campus excited about women's basketball in the way her predecessor, Chris Gobrecht did. Washington athletic director Todd Turner has said he believes the program can be one of the nation's elite.
