Sonics forward Fortson suspended for two games
Sonics forward Danny Fortson has been suspended without pay for two games for conduct detrimental to the team, general manager Rick Sund announced today.
Seattle Times staff reporter
Citing conduct detrimental to the team, the Sonics slapped a two-game suspension on Danny Fortson this morning. He flew back to Seattle today and will miss tonight's game against Boston and Sunday's matinee at Toronto.
The punishment was a response to Fortson's decision to skip Thursday's practice at Suffolk University in Boston. After the workout, coach Bob Hill said he had a brief telephone conversation with Fortson, who believed he was not required to attend. Hill said he told Fortson that his presence was mandatory and Fortson agreed to take a cab to the workout, but never arrived.
It was the second team function Fortson missed during this road trip. He also skipped a morning shootaround drill on Tuesday in New York.
The suspension will cost Fortson $80,451 in lost pay. He's scheduled to rejoin the team on Tuesday, but this latest mishap might cause the team to reconsider granting his buyout request. The Sonics declined to buy out the remainder of his $6.6 million salary last month.
