The Sonics are planning a tribute Monday for Dennis Johnson, the former Sonics guard who died Thursday in Austin, Texas at the age of 52.
Prior to the Sonics' game against Portland, there will be a moment of silence and a video tribute.
Sonics players will wear a black strip on the shoulder part of their jerseys, and either a No. 24 or the initials "DJ" will be placed on the KeyArena court for the remainder of the season, though that won't start on Monday, a team spokesman said.
Johnson, MVP of the 1979 NBA Finals when the Sonics beat the Washington Bullets, died after a practice session for the Austin (Texas) Toros of the NBA Developmental League. Johnson had been the Toros' coach the past two seasons. He collapsed outside the training facility from a heart attack.
Coincidentally the Sonics planned to retire jersey No. 24 on Monday in honor of Spencer Haywood, the organization's first superstar. The ceremony will still take place, but if a number is placed on the court, it will represent both players.
Haywood's ceremony will occur during an extended halftime.
