M's ready to sign Jeff Weaver

The Mariners have locked up veteran right-hander Jeff Weaver for their 2007 rotation.

According to sources, the club has reached agreement with Weaver's agent, Scott Boras, on a one-year contract with a base salary of $8.325 million. With incentives, Weaver will reportedly have a chance to earn $9.4 million.

An industry source confirmed the deal is done, pending a physical by Weaver, and is likely to be announced on Monday.

Weaver, 30, earned $8.3 million last year, when he was a combined 8-14 with a 5.76 earned-run-average for the Angels and Cardinals.

After Weaver started the year 3-9 with a 6.29 earned-run-average in 88 2/3 innings, the Angels released him on June 30 to make a roster spot for his younger brother, Jered.

Weaver then signed with the Cardinals and was 5-4, 5.18 the rest of the way. He starred in the postseason, winning a game in each series, including the World Series clincher with a strong eight-inning performance against Detroit.

With the Mariners, Weaver will join a rotation that includes Felix Hernandez, Jarrod Washburn, Miguel Batista and Horacio Ramirez.
