Football | Cougars limping to Stanford

The injury news isn't good from Pullman as Washington State begin preparations for Saturday's Pac-10 opener at winless Stanford (0-3, 0-1 Pac-10).

Starting left tackle Bobby Byrd (right knee medial collateral ligament sprain) and starting wide receiver Chris Jordan (left knee sprain) are listed as out indefinitely.

Jordan's two receiving touchdowns at Stanford in 2003 were the difference in a 24-14 Cougars victory.

Byrd suffered his injury early in the third quarter in Saturday's 17-15 win over Baylor at Qwest Field. He was replaced by sophomore Derek Hunter.

The Cougars are deep at receiver and Brandon Gibson is expected to replace Jordan.

Listed under "no practice" in Monday's medical update were starting right guard Dan Rowlands (left knee MCL sprain), starting running back DeMaundray Woolridge (thigh bruise) and backup tight end Jesse Taylor (right knee MCL sprain), who is valuable on special teams.

Upgraded to "limited" on the injury list are two starters who got hurt in camp in August. The two — defensive tackle Feveae'i Ahmu (partial stress fracture in foot) and right guard Andy Roof (thumb surgery) — haven't played yet but might see action against Stanford. A new name on the limited list is starting defensive end Lance Broadus (groin). Starting cornerback Don Turner (hip) remains on the limited list after missing the past two games.

Cardinal banged up, too

Stanford also has been hard hit by injuries.

Premier receiver Mark Bradford could miss the rest of the season after suffering a foot injury in the Week 2 loss at San Jose State. Starting fullback Nick Frank was forced to retire from football last week because of a cervical spine condition.

Tim Mattran, projected as starting center, suffered a broken leg in the summer and has yet to play. Backup receiver Marcus McCutcheon (knee) is out for Saturday's game.

• Cougars kicker Loren Langley was named Pac-10 special-teams player of the week after kicking the winner against Baylor. Langley's 17-yard field goal with 9 seconds to play lifted WSU to the 17-15 victory.

• Saturday's game won't be televised.

• The visiting team has won the past six games in the WSU-Stanford series, which the Cardinal lead 32-23-1. Stanford is on a two-game winning streak in the series, prevailing in 2004 and 2005 in Pullman.
