NW Briefs: Washington's Tomasevic doubly honored

Washington senior Sanja Tomasevic has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Player of the Week after leading the second-ranked Huskies to two road wins against No. 13 California and No. 3 Stanford.

The National Player of the Week award is the second for Tomasevic, who also earned the honor on Sept. 2, 2003. It is her fourth Pac-10 Player of the Week award.

Other conference honors

• Central Washington University quarterback Mike Reilly and linebacker Chris Burch were named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.

• Seattle University's Cameron Weaver was named GNAC men's soccer Player of the Week.

• Western Washington's Logan Senrud was named GNAC cross country Runner of the Week.

• Seattle Pacific's Chelsey Myers was named GNAC volleyball co-Player of the Week.

Times' Newnham honored

Former Seattle Times columnist Blaine Newnham will receive the 2005 Distinguished Service Award by the Northwest Golf Media Association, and will be honored at a banquet Thursday at Rainier Golf & Country Club. Newnham was at The Times from 1983 until earlier this year, although he still contributes a Sunday column for the newspaper.

Golf

Washington's Sung Ea Lee and Amy Wang and Washington State's Anastasia Kostina are among nine players tied for 12th at 3-over 75 after the first round of the 24th annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Women's Invitational, held at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish. They trail leaders Da Sol Chung of UNLV and Jenni Tangtiphaiboontana of Stanford by three shots.

The Huskies are eighth (308) and Cougars 13th (318) in the team standings, which Pepperdine leads (294).

• Katja Trygg holds a nine-shot lead in medalist play and Western Washington has a 32-stroke advantage in the team standings after first-day action at the Vikings Women's Invitational at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Western had rounds of 309 and 305 for a 36-hole total of 614, ahead of second-place Western New Mexico. Trygg opened with a 2-under 71 and had a second-round 74 for a 145 total. Teammate Catherine Kim is second at 154.

• WSU's Chris Collins shot a 4-under 67 to tie for 11th after the first round of the Alister MacKenzie Men's Invitational, held at the Meadow Club Golf Course in Fairfax, Calif. Collins is seven shots out of the lead, held by Christian Vozza of Michigan.

The Cougars finished the day in eighth place at 2-under 566. Purdue leads the pack at 544.

Women's soccer

Goalkeeper Teresa Fish got her third shutout of the year as Western Washington (7-4-0, 4-2-0 GNAC) blanked Central Washington (5-8-1, 3-8-1) 3-0 in Ellensburg.

Volleyball

Evergreen State (2-8) was swept 30-22, 30-11, 30-17 by Northwest (17-1).
