BOISE, Idaho — Lorenzo Romar has agreed to a new eight-year contract to coach the Washington men's basketball team, the school announced today shortly before the Huskies took the court for their first-round game in the NCAA tournament against Montana.
Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed. The school said terms would be revealed when the deal is signed.
Romar and UW athletic director Todd Turner have been working on a new contract for several months. Romar is in the third year of the original six-year deal he signed in 2002 which pays him $700,000 per season plus another $100,000 in incentives.
Romar, who played at UW from 1978-80, has said repeatedly he wants to stay at Washington long term.
"Lorenzo has done an unbelievable job of revitalizing Washington basketball and we felt this was the appropriate time to make the announcement that he will be our coach for a long time to come," Turner said in a statement. "He has expressed that he wants to stay at Washington for a long time and this new contract will make that a reality."
In a statement, Romar said: "I'm ecstatic. I'm fortunate to not only be able to do something I love, coaching, but to be able to do it at the place of my choice."
Romar had told The Seattle Times yesterday that he was close to signing a new deal.
"It's what I want and I've never said anything different," he said. "I think good programs and coaches grow together. I love the University of Washington and I love living in Seattle. I don't want to be jumping around the country to the highest bidder. I think peace of mind is more important."
Romar was the Pac-10 coach of the year this season, leading the Huskies to a 27-5 record and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. He is 56-34 in three years at UW.
