Senior midfielder C.J. Klaas was named Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year, freshman forward Ely Allen was Freshman/Newcomer of the Year and Dean Wurzberger earned Co-Coach of the Year honors for Washington yesterday in men's soccer. Nine Huskies were selected to the All-Pac-10 team, led by four-time honoree Klaas. Junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander, sophomore forward Kevin Forrest and Klaas were first-team selections while junior midfielder Mike Chabala and sophomore defender Ty Harden made the second team. Birklid and Eylander joined sophomore forward Kevin Forrest on the Pac-10 All-Academic first team. Birklid and honorable-mention Casey Armstrong were honored for the third straight year. UW's Clare Rustad and Cassie Giles made the All-Pac-10 Academic Women's Soccer first team. Megan Cecchini and Ashley Lara of Washington State also made the first team. Klaas shared Player of the Year with UCLA's Patrick Ianni, and Wurzberger with UCLA coach Jorge Salcedo.
Notes Washington pitcher Tim Lincecum was one of only two sophomores named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-America first team. Gonzaga catcher Kiel Thibault also made the first team. Central Washington lost to Hawaii Pacific 30-28, 30-28, 29-31, 32-30 in NCAA Division II Pacific Regional volleyball in La Jolla, Calif.
California (15-9, 10-5 Pac-10) beat WSU (4-24, 1-14) 30-23, 30-20, 30-18 in volleyball in Berkeley, Calif.
Pitcher Elliott Cribby, of Lake Washington High and Columbia Basin CC, outfielder Brett Kaluza of Skyline and outfielder Matt Miller of Redmond were among five who signed letters of intent to play UW baseball. Also signing were pitcher Bryce Mooney of Lake Oswego, Ore., pitcher Geoff Nichols of Portland, Ore. Kristen Omori of Kirkland, Kelly Gilbert of Phoenix, Ariz., Amanda Gering of Leduc, Alberta, and Ashley Houghting of Welland, Ontario, signed for Washington gymnastics. Marissa Hill of Mount Si, Sarah Primrose of Issaquah, Angie Alvord of Meridian and Shanley Besett of Curtis signed with Western Washington volleyball. Tommy Bullock of Kamiak signed for WWU men's golf, and Tori Klettke of Prairie for women's golf. Sarah Mohr of Portland, Ore., signed with Seattle Pacific volleyball. Nick Eldridge of Clackamas, Ore., signed to play men's basketball at Saint Martin's. Twenty-two curling teams from the U.S. and Canada will compete in a tournament today through Monday at the Seattle's Granite Curling Club.
