Notebook: Top-seeded players advance in KingCo 3A tennis tourney

The top four seeds for both singles and doubles advanced to the semifinals of the KingCo 3A boys tennis tournament yesterday at Mercer Island High School.

Top seed Jeff Hammond of Mercer Island beat David Younger of Interlake and Loren Lo of Newport. Second seed Garren Azama of Newport also won both of his matches, beating John Huang of Interlake and Matt Enkema of Bellevue. Third seed Dan Wilson advanced to the semifinals with a victory over fifth seed Ryan Farber of Bellevue, and fourth seed Chris Trippel of Mercer Island advanced by beating sixth seed Jeff Casserd of Issaquah.

In doubles, top-seeded Mike Kung and Jacob Wolf of Sammamish advanced along with second-seeded Chris Bailey and Chris Winterbauer of Mercer Island. No. 3 Jon Chang and Frederick Walsh of Newport beat fifth-seeded Trevor Fulp and Jordan Culpepper of Mercer Island. No. 4 Chris Lumry and David Farber of Bellevue beat No. 6 Josh Levy and Patrick Boorkman of Newport.

Brown takes position as sports consultant

Fred Brown Jr., who last week resigned after one season as boys basketball coach at Eastside Catholic, has accepted a position as sports consultant with Marshall Harris Sports Management in Seattle.

He said his decision to leave the Crusaders was motivated by a desire to better provide for his wife and two children.

"This was a nice opportunity. I believe opportunities do not go away, they go to someone else," he said. "I couldn't pass this up."

Skyline, Garfield host volleyball matches

Two new locations will play host in this week's KingCo 4A District volleyball tournament. Skyline, in its first year of KingCo 4A, won the regular-season KingCo 4A title with a 10-1 league record. Garfield, meanwhile, finished second to earn the other host spot.

Inglemoor plays Woodinville in tonight's opening match at 5:30 at Garfield, followed by at 7:30 match between perennial league power Bothell against Ballard. At Skyline, Eastlake faces Redmond at 5:30, followed by Ballard vs. Skyline at 7:30.
 
The tournament is double-elimination with losers of today's matches playing Thursday at 5:30 at the same venues. Winners will play at 7:30. The tournament concludes Saturday at Ballard High School, with the top two teams advancing to the state tournament Nov. 5-6 at the Everett Events Center.

Notes

• Thursday's Sea-King 3A District cross country championship at Lower Woodland Park should provide some insight to November's state meet. On the boys side, five of the top-10 ranked teams will be represented, led by second-ranked Bishop Blanchet and third-ranked Seattle Prep. Mercer Island is seventh, Newport eighth and Bellevue ninth.

In the girls race, Newport is the top-ranked 3A team in the state, Bellevue is ranked third and Blanchet eighth.

The boys race is at 2:30, with the girls race at 3:15.

• The KingCo 4A District cross-country championship meet is Friday at Lincoln Park. The boys race starts at 2:45 p.m., followed by the girls race at 3:15.
