PORTLAND, Ore. — Roger Levesque provided all the scoring for the Seattle Sounders in a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers last night in an A-League soccer match.

Sounders goalkeeper Preston Burpo made four impressive saves and assisted on Levesque's second goal for his first point of the season.

Records: Milwaukee 8-9-2, 26 points, fifth in Western Conference; Seattle 11-9-3 overall, 8-9-3, 27 points, fourth in Western Conference.

Notes: This is an important matchup for two teams battling for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Injury-plagued Seattle most likely needs to win six of its final nine regular-season matches to reach the postseason. ... The Sounders lead the season series with Milwaukee 2-0-1, with 2-1 victories at home May 28 and on the road June 13, and a 2-2 tie on July 2 in Milwaukee.

Levesque got the Sounders on the board in the 42nd minute, firing a point-blank shot into the net off a corner kick from Jonathan Bolanos for a 1-0 lead.

Levesque tallied his second goal of the match in the 80th minute. He and Burpo connected on a long-distance outlet pass, and as Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders came out to challenge him, Levesque chipped the ball over his head and into the net.

The Sounders defense contributed greatly to the shutout. Defenders Danny Jackson, Ryan Edwards and Velez held the Timbers to just three shots in the second half.
