WASHINGTON – Fabian Espindola scored his seventh goal of the season to lead D.C. United to a 1-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City in a Major League Soccer match Saturday.
Bill Hamid made five saves to preserve his third shutout and D.C.’s fifth this season.
United’s victory was its first over Sporting Kansas City since a 2-1 decision May 5, 2010, with Kansas City winning six matches and drawing one since.
Defending league champion Sporting Kansas City (5-5-4) had its winless streak stretched to five matches as D.C. United (6-4-3) climbed past it into second in the Eastern Conference behind leader New England (7-4-2).
