Chat rewind with Sounders FC assistant coach Brian Schmetzer

Latest from the Sounders FC blog

Sounders FC assistant coach Brian Schmetzer has been an integral part of the Seattle-area soccer scene for more than 30 years.

He was signed by the NASL Sounders in 1980 out of Nathan Hale High School and enjoyed a 15-year career that included three MISL championships with the San Diego Sockers, a stint as a player-assistant coach with the Tacoma Stars and a final indoor season with the Seattle SeaDogs in 1995.

His successful run as the head coach of the A-League and USL Sounders began in 2002 and he led the club to two USL titles in 2005 and 2007.

When Sounders FC joined MLS in 2009 he became Sigi Schmid's top assistant coach and has been part of three U.S. Open Cup championship teams.

Schmetzer answered questions about his playing days in Seattle, his coaching career and more in a chat on Thursday afternoon.
