Bayern Munich advances in UEFA Champions League

Bastian Schweinsteiger scored in the 55th minute, and defending champion Bayern Munich of Germany tied Arsenal of England 1-1 Tuesday to reach the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on 3-1 aggregate.

After a 2-0 victory in London on Feb. 19, Bayern increased its lead in the home-and-home series when Schweinsteiger scored off Franck Ribery’s cross.

Lukas Podolski of Arsenal got a goal against his former team two minutes later.

In the night’s other Champions League match, Diego Costa scored twice to lead Atletico Madrid of Spain over visiting AC Milan of Italy 4-1 for a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Holden to miss at least 6 months

American midfielder Stuart Holden, 28, has undergone another operation to repair ligaments in his right knee and will be sidelined from six to nine months.

Bolton, Holden’s team in England’s second-tier League Championship, made the announcement eight days after the 28-year-old was injured.

“Unfortunately, Stuart’s knee has gone. His surgeon has had a look and has deemed this to be the best course of action,” Bolton manager Dougie Freedman said. “We’re all obviously very disappointed for Stuart, but he’s a warrior and a fighter and someone who knows exactly what he wants to achieve.”

Dovale to play for Sporting KC

Defending champion Sporting Kansas City has signed versatile Spanish midfielder Antonio Dovale, 23, who will be added to the roster of the Major League Soccer team once his international transfer certificate and visa are in order.

Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said Dovale can play multiple positions.

Stars’ Peverley has tests on heart

Stars forward Rich Peverley remained hospitalized in stable condition in Dallas, undergoing heart tests after collapsing on the bench during a home game Monday against Columbus that was postponed.

Teammates are trying to deal with what they saw.

After an eerily quiet flight and sleepless nights all around, the Stars were back on the ice for a morning skate in St. Louis, relieved the 31-year-old Peverley’s irregular heart condition had stabilized but clearly shaken.

Even if the NHL had not postponed the game in Dallas with the Blue Jackets leading 1-0 early in the first period, linemate Tyler Seguin was done for the night. He had come off the ice just ahead of Peverley and was right there when Peverley lost consciousness during what team officials called a “cardiac event.”

“I went in the room and took my stuff off right away,” said Seguin, his voice catching a bit. “I was right beside him when it was all happening.”

It is likely Peverley won’t be back this season and the condition seemingly places his career in jeopardy. After being revived, Peverley asked if he could get back on the ice and play again.

In Tuesday’s game, the Stars beat St. Louis 3-2 as Jamie Benn scored 3:42 into overtime.

NASCAR qualifying will change

Moving swiftly to address safety concerns expressed by drivers, NASCAR banned cool-down laps and will start allowing teams to hook up cooling units to their engines on pit road — the first major changes to the popular new knockout qualifying format unveiled this season.

The decisions were made during a conference call with crew chiefs.

Oscar Pistorius fired guns in public in the months before he killed his girlfriend, a former friend said at the double-amputee Olympic athlete’s murder trial in Pretoria, South Africa.

Darren Fresco said Pistorius fired once out of a car sunroof on a road and once in a crowded restaurant.

The account portrayed Pistorius, 27, as a reckless hothead infatuated with firearms and seemingly drifting down a precarious path before he fatally shot Reeva Steenkamp, 29, through a closed toilet door at his home on Feb. 14, 2013. Pistorius has said he shot Steenkamp by mistake, thinking she was a dangerous intruder.

Li’s last game went to deuce 10 times before she won on her 11th match point when Wozniak’s backhand sailed long.

“I can only say, ‘Welcome to the crazy women’s tennis tour,’ ” Li said.
