A team could do worse than filling roster depth with a World Cup veteran.
That is what Sounders FC did Wednesday, signing former Mexican international Gonzalo Pineda, pending receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate. The 31-year-old central midfielder had been at training camp for several weeks and played in four preseason games.
Per MLS and team policy, terms were not disclosed.
Sporting director Chris Henderson said Pineda “is a cerebral player with good technique and vision. Gonzo reads the game very quickly and is always thinking ahead of the play.”
Pineda has made 32 appearances for the Mexican national team, starting three of four games in the 2006 World Cup.
He has also played 208 games in Mexico’s top league, Liga MX, with teams like UNAM Pumas, Chivas de Guadalajara, San Luis, Cruz Azul, Puebla, and, most recently, Queretaro.
“Gonzalo is an experienced player who can control a game in midfield,” Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said. “His left foot and vision on the ball will help us in key situations.”
The move brings the Sounders a step closer to settling on an opening-day roster ahead of Saturday’s home game against reigning MLS champion Sporting Kansas City. Seattle effectively has 25 of 30 roster spots filled but still has a handful of unsigned invitees and draft picks training with the team.
Pineda would take up the fifth of seven international roster slots, with others held by Obafemi Martins, Marco Pappa, Djimi Traore and Damion Lowe.
