The Sounders have been promising more additions before the start of the MLS season, particularly a difference-maker in midfield.
Well, consider the objective satisfied in Friday’s acquisition of two-time MLS All-Star Marco Pappa. The 26-year-old Guatemalan was already signed with the league and joined Seattle through the allocation order, of which the Sounders had the No. 1 pick.
Goal.com first reported that Pappa could be coming to Seattle on Jan. 14 and Guatemala’s Nuestro Diario was first to report the deal was done Friday. Pappa is scheduled to join preseason camp in Arizona and will be added to the roster upon receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate.
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, per MLS and team policy. Pappa was last listed as making $140,000 in 2012, though estimates leaguewide are that the deal could be worth at least twice that much.
“Marco is a proven and established player who has been very productive in this league,” said Sounders sporting director Chris Henderson in a news release.
“He has the technical quality to create chances for himself and his teammates at any moment. ... He is a high-character guy who brings excitement and quality to our midfield.”
Pappa most recently played for Dutch club SC Heerenveen, where he played just 11 games last season after a transfer from Chicago. He made 112 appearances for the Fire from 2008 to 2012, scoring 26 goals and adding 12 assists, and has 30 international appearances for Guatemala.
Pappa, an MLS All-Star in 2010 and 2012, is left-footed and would be expected to start in a midfield that includes Clint Dempsey, Osvaldo Alonso and Brad Evans.
• Evans and DeAndre Yedlin are with the U.S. national team for an exhibition Saturday against South Korea at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Evans was a key figure in the U.S. clinching a World Cup berth last year, while Yedlin is seeking his first appearance with the senior team.
• Jamaican midfielder Jason Morrison has joined preseason camp in Arizona on a tryout.
