The Sounders selected two internationals in the final rounds of the MLS SuperDraft on Tuesday: forward/midfielder Stefano Rijssel and midfielder Fabio Pereira.
Rijssel, a 21-year-old Suriname native, was drafted No. 55 overall in the third round. He is still under contract with Trinidadian club W Connection FC, though, so if Seattle wants him on the roster for the upcoming season, it would require a loan deal with an option to buy.
Kurt Schmid, Sounders assistant coach and scout, said in a news release that Rijssel “showed good tactical sense as well as physical qualities (at the MLS combine). He can play wide in midfield but also has some versatility.”
Pereira, a 22-year-old Brazilian, was the last pick of the four-round draft at No. 77 overall. He played at the University of Michigan, scoring 13 goals over four seasons and adding 22 assists, second most in program history.
“We like his soccer IQ and technical ability,” Schmid said. “Fabio can play all over midfield and has a good engine.
“Both players have the ability to compete for a spot on our roster.”
Rijssel and Pereira would fill international roster slots if they make the team.
The Sounders have three of seven spots occupied: Obafemi Martins, Djimi Traore, and Damion Lowe.
Preseason training camp opens Saturday.
• Akron midfielder Aodhan Quinn, who played for the Sounders FC U-23s last season, was drafted by Philadelphia at No. 52 overall in the third round.
