Joshua Mayers' MLS power rankings
Rankings will run Wednesdays during the regular season
Team (prev. rank) Comment
1. L.A. Galaxy (1) No Donovan? No Beckham? No problem. Mike Magee's hat trick highlighted blowout win.
2. Sporting K.C. (4) Graham Zusi was in MVP form in the opener, playing a part in all three goals of a nice win.
3. Houston (5) Team's 26-game home unbeaten streak is second in MLS history (29, RSL in 2009-11).
4. Real Salt Lake (9) Rumors of its demise seem premature after beating reigning Supp. Shield winners on road.
5. San Jose (2) Chris Wondolowski put the blame on himself for the RSL loss after missing eight shots.
6. Sounders FC (3) Week 1 loss at home to Montreal is hardly a confidence boost before daunting CCL matchup.
7. N.Y. Red Bulls (6) All three goals in a road tie in Portland came from RSL imports Espindola, Olave.
8. Columbus (10) On the road for five of seven to begin year, but started impressively with 3-0 rout at Chivas.
9. Vancouver (11) Week 1 win came at a huge cost as captain Jay DeMerit completely ruptured his Achilles.
10. D.C. United (7) Dwayne De Rosario still has one game left to serve on suspension for a preseason head butt.
11. FC Dallas (13) Many were surprised to see former MVP David Ferreira stationed unfamiliarly out wide.
12. Montreal (15) Stunned Seattle, could complete a two-game sweep of the Pacific NW at Portland next week.
13. Portland (12) Had a horrific first half vs. NY but fought back from 3-1 down to earn a tie.
14. Chicago (8) In last place by empirical measures after a 4-0 loss in LA, the worst drubbing of the weekend.
15. Philadelphia (14) Ex-Sounder Seba Le Toux scored 2013's first MLS goal, then the Union allowed next three.
16. New England (16) The only inactive team over the weekend opens on national television Saturday in Chicago.
17. Colorado (18) The gaffe of the week went to Rapids GK Steward Ceus, which led to only goal in 1-0 loss.
18. Toronto FC (19) The oldest of three Canadian teams in MLS but the furthest behind despite the head start.
19. Chivas USA (17) Week 1 attendance was officially 7,121. SI report said only 2,700 or so tickets were sold.
