Seattle's new professional women's soccer team announced its name Wednesday, and it's a familiar one: Reign FC.
The name is partly a tribute to the former Seattle's women's basketball team called the Reign, which played in the defunct American Basketball League from 1996 to 1998.
Owner Bill Predmore said in a news release the announcement "is the result of a thoughtful process to identify the name that best represents the values of our club, articulates our longterm ambitions and celebrates the community within which our supporters live."
Reign FC is one of eight teams in the new National Women's Soccer League. The preseason starts in March with a 22-game regular season set to begin in April.
Amy Carnell, who served as general manager of the Sounders Women last summer, will assume that same role for Reign FC, whose team colors are white, platinum, royal blue and midnight black.
In the coming weeks, the club will announce the hiring of a coach, additional front-office hires, the establishment of a home stadium, ticket information and a league schedule.
Sounders learn CCL quarterfinal dates
Sounders FC will kick off a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal on the road against Mexico's Tigres UANL on March 6 and conclude the two-game, aggregate-goals series at CenturyLink Field on March 12.
Both games start at 7 p.m.; ticket information for the match at home will be announced in January.
Seattle will have a busy start to the year, with the MLS season starting March 2 at home against Montreal. The league gave the Sounders a Week 2 bye to focus on the CCL series.
The tournament semifinals will be held April 2-4 and April 9-11, and the Seattle-Tigres winner will face the winner of a quarterfinal between Mexico's Santos Laguna and the Houston Dynamo. A two-leg CCL final is set for April 24 and May 1, and the winner earns a berth into the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.
