At long last, Marcus Hahnemann is coming home.

Sounders FC acquired the veteran goalkeeper and Seattle native Friday through the MLS allocation process, ending a wait of more than a year due in part to a complicated league rule.

Hahnemann, 40, has been to two FIFA World Cups with the U.S. national team and played most of the last 13 years in England. He starred at Kentridge High School, Newport High School in Bellevue, Seattle Pacific University and the lower-division Sounders.

"This is where I started my career, and I wanted to finish here," Hahnemann said in a news release.

Mutual interest between the Sounders and Hahnemann started last summer as Kasey Keller's career winded down.

Hahnemann couldn't sign directly with Seattle, however, as former national-team players must go through the allocation order and be available to all MLS teams. Seattle acquired Hahnemann on Friday by trading a conditional draft pick to Toronto FC for the No. 1 ranking.

Hahnemann, who was released in May by Everton FC, said he was considering retirement before Seattle GM Adrian Hanauer called.

"I'm still kind of shocked it all happened," Hahnemann said, adding that he expects to back up Michael Gspurning.

Coach Sigi Schmid said in the news release that Hahnemann gives the club "experience and quality on and off the field."
