Records were broken and more appear ready to fall after Sounders FC's scintillating offensive performance in Saturday's 6-2 win at Chivas USA.

It was the most goals Seattle has ever scored on the road in MLS and matched a team high in any league game.

Leading the way was red-hot forward Fredy Montero, who netted a hat trick — his first with the Sounders and the fourth in club history. The 25-year-old Colombian has scored in four straight games, the longest active streak in MLS, and matched teammate Eddie Johnson for the team lead with 11 goals.

"He's playing well," coach Sigi Schmid said of Montero. "He's very sharp right now and very confident, and obviously that's a good thing for our team."

Added Montero: "I'm just happy to keep it up. We know that it is not the end; we have nine more games (in the regular season) where we have to make as many plays as we can."

So what record will fall next?

Maybe Montero's team record of 12 goals in a season, which he set in 2009 and matched last year. Both Montero and Johnson look set to surpass that mark.

Midfielder Mauro Rosales, who had a team-record three assists Saturday, one on each Montero goal, has already tied his franchise-best mark for assists in a season with 13.

The Sounders are on pace for their best record in team history following their fourth win in five games. With 43 points through 25 games, Seattle has surpassed last year's pace (42 points) despite a franchise-worst nine-game winless streak earlier this season.

What's most encouraging, perhaps, has been the integration of a new-look attack after the midseason addition of designated player Christian Tiffert. The Sounders have scored seven goals in the 115 minutes their new Big Four (Montero, Johnson, Rosales, Tiffert) has been on the field.

That works out to an average of about 5.5 goals per 90 minutes, and that potency was at its best Saturday.

"For the strikers, they were very effective and very calm with the ball," Rosales said. "Almost every time that we could make a good pass or a good pass through to them, they did very well."

NOTES

• Brad Evans' 10th-minute goal Saturday was his second of the MLS season, his first since March. Sammy Ochoa's in the 80th minute was his first of the season, and Tiffert earned his first assist on the play.

• The Sounders pulled into a second-place tie with Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference with 43 points. Seattle has played two fewer games, however, and has the advantage in the primary tiebreaker with more goals scored (40 to 37).
