Joshua Mayers' MLS power rankings
Rankings run Wednesdays during the regular season.
Team (prev. rank) Comment
1. San Jose (1) Trade acquisition Mehdi Ballouchy should help ease the loss of Marvin Chavez (hamstring).
2. Real Salt Lake (3) Of the team's past seven goals, Alvaro Saborio scored six and assisted on the other.
3. N.Y. Red Bulls (2) One of two remaining teams (the Dynamo is the other) that is unbeaten at home at 7-0-3.
4. Houston (5) Brad Davis notched five assists in his past three games to grab a share of the MLS lead with 10.
5. Sporting K.C. (4) Raced out of the gates with seven straight wins to start the year but has gone 4-7-4 since.
6. Sounders FC (7) MLS's top offense from 2011 is coming to life with multiple goals in four of the past five games.
7. D.C. United (6) Lost both league games in July, but tied PSG and contributed to the All-Stars' win vs. Chelsea.
8. L.A. Galaxy (9) Three DPs (Beckham, Donovan, Keane) have combined for 11 goals, 10 assists in a 4-0-1 run.
9. Columbus (11) Might a new-look attack of Jairo Arrieta/Federico Higuain carry the Crew to the playoffs?
10. Vancouver (8) The only team currently in a playoff position with a negative goal differential (-2).
11. Chicago (10) Unbeaten when scoring first this season (6-0-1); too bad it's only happened in 7 of 21 games.
12. Chivas USA (12) Best defense in the West (21 goals allowed) makes up for a punchless offense (14 scored).
13. Philadelphia (14) Has won three games with a goal in the 90th minute or later since a coaching change in June.
14. Montreal (15) DPs Marco Di Vaio and Alessandro Nesta played big roles in a 3-1 upset win vs. the Red Bulls.
15. New England (13) Newcomer Saer Sene's nine goals are a team high since Taylor Twellman scored 16 in 2007.
16. Toronto FC (16) Will CONCACAF Champions League be more of a priority with the MLS playoffs out of reach?
17. FC Dallas (17) Another unflattering stat? A 3-3-5 record after scoring first is a league worst this season.
18. Colorado (18) Coach Oscar Pareja apologized to fans after Saturday's loss to Seattle, the team's sixth in a row.
19. Portland (19) Scoreless streak of 292 min. is the fifth-worst in MLS this year. They have the worst, too: 339.
