Sounders FC, getting close to a complete roster, signed its top two draft picks, defender Andrew Duran and forward Babayele Sodade, on Thursday.
Both were taken in January's MLS SuperDraft and are expected to be reserves in their rookie seasons. Per league and club policies, terms were not disclosed, but both players will likely have off-budget contracts that won't count against the salary cap.
Duran, 22, was drafted with the 15th overall pick in the first round and can play every defensive position. Coach Sigi Schmid praised the Creighton product for improving early in camp and becoming more consistent.
Said Duran: "I'm super excited. ... I'm just really overjoyed to be here."
Sodade, 21, was selected with the 34th pick in the second round and is Seattle's biggest forward at 6 foot 3.
"I've been waiting for this my whole life; it's every soccer player's dream growing up," said Sodade.
Thursday was the deadline for MLS teams to comply with roster limitations. Schmid said the Sounders are "getting close" to finalizing their 2012 squad but that there are more additions and subtractions to come.
Notes
• Defender Daniel Steres has joined Sounders FC's training camp for a tryout. The 21-year-old was selected by Chivas USA in January's supplemental draft.
• The team held a 75-minute scrimmage Thursday at Starfire Sports Complex, and midfielder Michael Tetteh led his team to a 2-0 win with two goals. Midfielder Steve Zakuani played briefly to get his first game action against outside competition. Among the several guest players were former Sounder Taylor Graham and academy products Darwin Jones and Jamael Cox.
