Sounders FC seeks supplements for roster

The Sounders hope to defy the odds and find contributors with their four picks in Tuesday's four-round MLS Supplemental Draft.

Realistically, Sounders FC officials know the odds of finding impact players in the MLS Supplemental Draft are long.

But that won't keep them from trying.

Seattle has found a couple of keepers in late rounds before and seeks to do that again Tuesday in a four-round Supplemental Draft that comes on the heels of Thursday's two-round MLS SuperDraft. The Supplemental Draft will take place on a leaguewide conference call and the Sounders hold the 33rd, 34th, 53rd and 72nd overall picks.

"Sometimes there's a diamond in the rough," said general manager Adrian Hanauer.

In 2009, Sounders FC drafted forward Mike Fucito in the equivalent of Tuesday's second round (MLS has changed the number of rounds in the SuperDraft and Supplemental Draft the past few years). Last year, Seattle acquired goalkeeper Josh Ford in a similar position.

Fucito played 29 games in all competitions in 2011. Ford served most of last year as the No. 3 goalkeeper and is in contention for the backup role for the upcoming season.

"There's always a chance of that sort of pick," said Hanauer, "but it certainly gets harder the further down you go."

The Sounders evaluated several of the eligible college and international players in the MLS combine a couple weeks ago. The team also hosted 67 players in its own invitational combine last month in Las Vegas.

Seattle is without a first-round pick Tuesday after trading it to Chicago last season to acquire forward Sammy Ochoa through the allocation process. The Sounders picked up an extra second-round pick from FC Dallas in exchange for goalkeeper Chris Seitz in a trade after the 2010 re-entry draft.

Preseason details announced

Sounders FC's preseason, which opens locally on Thursday, will include stops in Arizona and Florida, the team announced Monday. Seattle will train in Casa Grande, Ariz., from Jan. 30 to Feb. 7. Camp goes to Bradenton, Fla., on Feb. 11 (a return date is currently undetermined).

The Sounders are also trying to schedule a pair of preseason friendlies against Mexican teams — perhaps one at home and one on the road — to help better prepare for a two-leg CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Santos Laguna on March 7 and 14.

NOTES

• Ochoa will switch from wearing jersey No. 19 to No. 26. Four new Sounders were also issued uniform numbers: goalkeeper Michael Gspurning (No. 1), defender Adam Johansson (No. 5), defender Marc Burch (No. 8) and midfielder Christian Sivebaek (No. 28).

• Three Sounders are on national team duty and will join preseason camp in Arizona. Midfielder Brad Evans and defender Jeff Parke are training with the U.S. national team for friendlies against Venezuela (Saturday) and Panama (Jan. 25). Johansson is with the Swedish national team for Wednesday's friendly against Bahrain, a match to be played in Qatar.
