ALAJUELA, Costa Rica — Sounders FC got two more goals from forward Fredy Montero to beat CS Herediano 2-1 Wednesday in a CONCACAF Champions League group-stage game.
Seattle leads CCL's Group D with a 3-0 record and is well on the way to qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.
"Last year we were disappointed in our performance in Champions League, maybe even a little bit embarrassed," said Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, whose team lost five of its six group-stage games in 2010. "It was definitely a goal we had set for ourselves that we wanted to get better as we came back into it. ... I'm very proud of what we have done."
Montero, who has four goals in the Sounders' last three games, broke a 1-1 tie in the 54th minute, tapping in a deflected shot by midfielder Roger Levesque in front of the goal for the winner. A nice header by forward Nate Jaqua set up Levesque's left-footed chance, which was slowed by goalkeeper Daniel Cambronero before Montero finished it.
Herediano (0-3) has been outscored 9-1 in group play.
Seattle took the lead in the third minute, when Jaqua collected a pass from Levesque and found Montero behind the Herediano defense. The 24-year-old Colombian calmly converted the open shot.
Montero also scored the lone goal in a U.S. Open Cup semifinal win against FC Dallas on Aug. 30 and had Seattle's only score in a 2-1 MLS loss Saturday to Real Salt Lake.
"If I keep scoring goals, that's good for me because that is important for forwards," Montero said. "What's important for me now is that the team gets the three points."
Herediano scored on a penalty kick by Jose Cancela in first-half stoppage time.
• Sounders FC next hosts D.C. United in a 6 p.m. league game Saturday, then faces Herediano in another CCL game at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Both games will be at CenturyLink Field. MF Alvaro Fernandez is suspended for Tuesday's match due to yellow-card accumulation.
• Elsewhere in Group D, Guatemalan club Comunicaciones beat Monterrey of Mexico 1-0.
