TORONTO — This time, the game was decided before stoppage time, which was a change this Major League Soccer season for Sounders FC.
A couple of second-half mistakes resulted in goals by Dwayne De Rosario and O'Brian White and drained the stoppage-time suspense from Seattle's 2-0 loss to Toronto FC before a rain-soaked crowd of 18,394 at BMO Field on Sunday afternoon.
It was Toronto's first win — and first goals — against Sounders FC (2-2-2). It was also Sounders coach Sigi Schmid's first loss to Toronto since it entered the league in 2007. His record, dating back to his days coaching Columbus, is now 4-1-4 against TFC.
"I thought we played well in the first half," Schmid said. "I thought we had more of the game. We created some good chances."
Toronto's first goal came in the 58th minute, and the play began after Chad Barrett's pass bounced off the referee. The Sounders had chances to deal with it but Osvaldo Alonso gave up the ball to De Rosario, who made no mistake.
The second goal started with an errant pass at midfield by defender Tyrone Marshall, who formerly played for Toronto. De Rosario took it and set up White for the goal.
"Sometimes, unfortunately you make mistakes," Sounders FC forward Freddie Ljungberg said. "We had two mistakes, it happens to everybody, and they killed the game for us."
The Sounders, who won last season in Toronto 2-0 and tied 0-0 in the return match in Seattle, were deprived of victory Thursday in Dallas by a dubious stoppage-time penalty and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. After three consecutive games decided in stoppage time, Seattle came to Toronto thirsting for the full three points.
But because of injuries and playing two games so close together, Sounders FC's lineup Sunday was without five usual starters.
"I was not displeased with the guys who played," Schmid said. "I thought we were doing all right and were pretty comfortable, and then we made a big mistake in the back (on De Rosario's goal) and that was a shot of adrenalin for Toronto. And then we made another mistake (on White's goal), and then after that Toronto dominated the game."
Toronto (2-3) set out to play a physical game. That was evident in the seventh minute, when Ljungberg, who started Sunday after playing just 15 minutes against Dallas, had his legs taken out from beneath him on an overly aggressive tackle by Martin Saric.
The midfielder came flying in from a distance with both feet. No foul was called, apparently because he got a foot to the ball, but Saric was fortunate not to get a card.
"It's a referee's job to control that part of it," Schmid said. "There were some strong challenges for sure at the beginning of the game."
Steve Zakuani, who entered the game in the 60th minute for Sanna Nyassi, described some of the tackles as "rough."
"Some of them I saw from the bench, they were late," he said. "There's being physical, and also there is crossing line and being dangerous. Some of them were strong challenges, but there were a couple of them that were pretty dangerous."
• Forward/midfielder Pat Noonan, who pulled a hamstring against Dallas, and forward/midfielder Michael Fucito, who has a knee bruise, were not in the lineup Sunday.
• Defender James Riley, who has a calf injury, started against TFC, and defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, who has a hip injury, was a reserve. Riley came out for David Estrada in the 78th minute.
