The Snohomish County Council voted unanimously Monday to rename the seven-story county administration building, which opened in March 2005, as The Robert J. Drewel Building.
Drewel served three terms as Snohomish County executive.
Drewel, now executive director of the Puget Sound Regional Council, was surprised at a county budget hearing where he had expected to speak about his agency's funding request.
"I have never been so flummoxed in my entire life," Drewel said.
All five council members lauded Drewel's leadership abilities and achievements, praising his integrity and his knack for working effectively with both political parties.
"You can put aside differences and still be friends," said Councilman Gary Nelson, whose Republican politics did not always jibe with those of Drewel, a Democrat.
