Disability? What disability?
"My mother used to tell us in the mornings, 'Carl, put on your shoes. Oscar, you put on your prosthetic legs, and that's the last I want to hear about it,' " amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius told Reuters.
"So I grew up not really thinking I had a disability. I grew up thinking I had different shoes."
Run, Adrian, run
From the Numbers Do Lie File comes word that the Vikings are 0-3 at Lambeau Field when Adrian Peterson rushes for 100 yards or more.
Which might be why the Packers are polishing their 2-5 defense this week.
Going green
Andy Reid, Ken Whisenhunt and Lovie Smith — all fired Monday — are already back on the NFL carousel as teams scramble to fill their head-coaching vacancies.
Say this about the NFL: It's big into recycling.
Just wondering
Why is there a University of Phoenix Stadium, but no University of Phoenix football team?
Poppin' the J
Andrei Kirilenko could fill up a stat sheet during his Utah Jazz days.
Or as Brad Rock of The Deseret News put it: "It was like watching Bert, the street musician in 'Mary Poppins,' playing trumpet, squeeze horn, accordion, harmonica, drums, cymbals and tambourine all at once."
Quote marks
• Golfer Juli Inkster, to The San Francisco Chronicle, on staying in shape last year after elbow surgery: "The poor dog is walked to death. Every time I grab the leash, she just cringes."
• Clay Travis of OutkickTheCoverage.com, via Twitter, on bowl wins by Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Rice: "Revenge of the nerds."
• Comedy writer Alan Ray, on top-ranked Notre Dame's stubborn defense: "They slow more drives than two seniors in a Prius."
From Russia, with love
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, playing in Moscow during the NHL lockout, and tennis star Maria Kirilenko are engaged to be married.
The wedding cake, we assume, will feature plenty of icing.
