Seattle University women lose to Kentucky on overtime corner-kick goal

Redhawks scored with a minute left in regulation to force the overtime

An overtime goal directly off a corner kick pushed Kentucky to a 2-1 victory over Seattle University in women’s soccer action Sunday at Championship Field in Seattle.

Cara Ledman, who had an assist on the Wildcats’ (1-1) goal in regulation, scored the winner in the 97th minute.

The Redhawks (1-1) were down 1-0 with a minute left in regulation when Natasha Howe passed the ball down field to Stephanie Verdoia just near the 18-yard mark. Verdoia drove it straight into the center of the net to force the overtime.

OTHER SOCCER

Karley Baggerly scored twice as Gonzaga (2-0) posted a 3-0 victory at Fresno State (1-1). Christie Tombari recorded her first shutout of the season and the seventh of her career.

TENNIS

Jacqueline Cako, a 22-year-old from Brier, Wash., captured the mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open National Playoffs, teaming with 31-year-old Joel Kielbowicz of Gross Pointe, Mich., to win in New Haven, Conn. The pair beat the brother-sister duo of Ena Shibahara and Shushi Shibahara 6-3, 6-1 to win the title and earn a spot in the U.S. Open this week in New York. Last year, Cako played for Arizona State.

CYCLING

• Tacoma native Tejay van Garderen claimed his second consecutive USA Pro Challenge title with a sixth-place finish in the concluding sunny and warm Boulder to Denver road race seventh stage. Van Garderen, 26 was victorious over Tom Danielson by 1 minute and 32 seconds. He led the race for the final five days. Alex Howes claimed the 78-mile stage, finishing in 2 hours, 45 minutes, 20 seconds.
