Redhawks women drop Texas State to remain in 1st place in conference

Sylvia Shephard scored a career-high 24 points and had eight rebounds as the Seattle University women beat Texas State 70-58 Saturday to finish the first half of the Western Athletic Conference season in first place.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Sylvia Shephard scored a career-high 24 points and had eight rebounds as the Seattle University women beat Texas State 70-58 Saturday to finish the first half of the Western Athletic Conference season in first place.

Brenda Adhiambo had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Redhawks (11-7, 8-1), and Kacie Sowell added 17 points.

Diamond Ford led the Bobcats (7-12, 1-8) with 23 points, and Jasmine Baugus had 14.

Seattle U led 31-26 at halftime and increased the margin to 15 twice, the second time being 62-47 with 3:36 remaining.

Ford scored nine points for the Bobcats over the next two minutes as they went on an 11-0 run to trail 62-58 at the 1:41 mark. But the Redhawks followed with an 8-0 run to end it.

Seattle U shot 50 percent from the field (27 for 54) to Texas State's 41.5 percent. The Redhawks also hit 13 of 14 free throws and outrebounded the Bobcats 36-24.

Seattle U is on the road again this week with games at San Jose State on Thursday and at Utah State on Saturday. The Redhawks' next home game is against Denver on Feb. 7.
