SAN JOSE, Calif. — In a game of big spurts, the Seattle University men's basketball team couldn't keep up with San Jose State, losing 76-71 in Western Athletic Conference play Saturday.

The Redhawks (5-8, 0-3 WAC) had a 15-1 scoring surge in the first half to take an eight-point lead. The Spartans (8-6, 3-1) came back with a 13-0 run, with the last 10 points scored by James Kinney, who finished with 26 points and seven rebounds.

Seattle U had a 7-2 run early in the second half, but the Spartans came back with an 11-0 rally to take control at 44-35.

Louis Garrett had a season-high 21 points and Chris Cunningham added 15 for the Spartans. D.J. Brown had 11 assists.

San Jose State led 29-28 at halftime and shot 43 percent from the field for the game. Seattle shot 34 percent, but out-rebounded the Spartans 39-35.

Chad Rasmussen led the Redhawks with 15 points. Louis Green had 14 points and nine rebounds. Luiz Bidart added 12 points, and Prince Obasi had six assists.
