Carpenter, the team's first-round pick in 2011, did not participate in Friday's practice, the reason cited as illness. He was listed as questionable, which translated to a 50-percent chance he would be available.

Now, he is out, Seattle announced on Saturday.

Carpenter was drafted as a tackle, but moved to guard this season. He missed training camp recovering from a knee injury, and he was out the first three games before returning in Week 4. He started the past five games.

With Carpenter out, Seattle faces a choice.

John Moffitt is available after recovering from a knee injury that kept him out the past five games. Moffitt could start in Carpenter's place at left guard. More likely, Moffitt will play right guard -- the position he has played for all of his 11 career starts as a Seahawk -- with Paul McQuistan moving from right guard to the left side where he started the first three games.

Carpenter's absence may disrupt the continuity of a line that had started the same configuration for five consecutive weeks, and last week in Detroit, held the opponent without a sack for the first time this season.
