Report: Mike Holmgren to retire at season's end

Mike Holmgren retiring from Cleveland at year's end
By Adam Schefter | ESPN.com

Mike Holmgren will retire at year's end, according to several ESPN reports.

Holmgren is more than the only coach to take Seattle to a Super Bowl.

He represents the path not taken three years ago when the franchise faced a crossroads.

Tim Ruskell was not returning as president. Jim Mora was entering the final month of a season, his team beginning what turned from a tailspin into a swirlie so vicious it left skid marks.

The Seahawks looked to their past and tried to re-hire Holmgren, the negotiation coming undone the night before a December home game against Tampa Bay.

Instead, Holmgren went to Cleveland, and owner Paul Allen decided to hit the reset button on his football franchise, choosing to hire Pete Carroll to come and turn the Seahawks into his program.

Three years later, the Browns have been sold, and Holmgren will retire after the season.
