Passing grades: Where Seahawks' Russell Wilson ranks among rookies
By Danny O'Neil | The Seattle Times
Miami's Ryan Tannehill passed for 431 yards in his team's overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals last week while Seattle's Russell Wilson has passed for 441 yards in the past three games combined.
And yet Seattle has won two games in that time, the Dolphins have lost two and that dichotomy gets to the heart of the puzzle Seattle is facing.
The Seahawks are much closer to being a contender than any of the other four teams currently starting a rookie at quarterback. They have allowed the second-fewest points of any team in the league and Marshawn Lynch is leading the yard in rushing.
Seattle doesn't need Wilson to put up 400 yards passing to win a game. The Seahawks don't need him to be the driving force to be the driving force of the offense like Robert Griffin III in Washington.
But they do need him to execute those limited opportunities he is given. In effect, the pressure on him to produce big numbers is lessened while the pressure on the execution has been heightened.
Of the five teams currently starting rookies at quarterback, Seattle is the team that is asking the least in terms of production, but the most in terms of precise execution, and after four games the Seahawks are the only team you look at and wonder if the rookie quarterback is holding the team back.
