QB Josh Portis among the Seahawks released Friday
Waived: DB Phillip Adams, DE Pierre Allen, LB Allen Bradford, WR Deon Butler, WR Kris Durham, G Paul Fanaika, G Rishaw Johnson, WR Jermaine Kearse, LB Kyle Knox, DE Cordarro Law, WR Ricardo Lockette, TE Sean McGrath, C Kris O'Dowd, QB Josh Portis, DB DeShawn Shead, LB Korey Toomer, WR Lavasier Tuinei.
Waived/injured: TE Cooper Helfet, RB Vai Taua.
Injured Reserve: LB Matt McCoy.
Physically Unable to Perform: DB Walter Thurmond.
Suspended: G Allen Barbre.
The moves that could be considered a surprise were moving James Carpenter from the Physically Unable to Perform list to the active roster. He had not practiced all training camp, and the team could have decided to put him on the reserve/PUP list, save a roster spot and begin practicing him after the sixth game. The fact he's on the active roster means the Seahawks expect him to start practicing in the next few weeks.
Also, Kregg Lumpkin made the team as a fifth running back. The team had four running backs heading into last season.
CB Phillip Adams appeared to be the No. 3 cornerback at one point in training camp, stepping up to get time with the first-unit defense when Brandon Browner sat out a practice. He was waived, however, which shows that Byron Maxwell and rookie Jeremy Lane improved over the course of training camp.
Rookie Cordarro Law very well might have been the toughest player for the Seahawks to exclude. He was very versatile in his time with the Seahawks, playing defensive end, practicing at linebacker and playing some defensive tackle in the Seahawks' nickel defense.

One player remains on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which does not count against the 53-man limit: CB Walter Thurmond. He can not begin practicing with the Seahawks until after the team's sixth game
One player is on the suspended list: G Allen Barbre, who will miss the first four games after violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
