Seahawks WRs not quite a Catch-22, but there are decisions to be made
Deon Butler is 5-10 and at 182 pounds, he is the lightest player on Seattle's roster. He also might be the fastest.
But physical differences aside, it's the similarities between Williams and Butler that will be the most striking when the Seahawks begin training camp on July 28.
They're going to be two receivers right in the thick of what might be the hottest roster competition in training camp.
Seattle has 13 wide receivers currently on its roster. Of those, I would consider three to be locks to make the Seahawks' 53-man roster, barring an injury.
Locks: Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin and Golden Tate. There simply isn't a scenario in which I see the Seahawks waking up on Sept. 1, and deciding that any of those three are not among the 53 best players to include on the roster.
After that, it gets complicated. Real complicated.
There are veterans Ben Obomanu, Butler and Williams. There are promising second-year players like Kris Durham -- a fourth-round pick in 2011 -- and Ricardo Lockette, who flashed his big-play potential at the end of the season. And don't forget the crew of undrafted free agents and offseason additions: Lavasier Tuinei, Charly Martin, Jermaine Kearse, Cameron Kenney and Phil Bates.
So how many can you expect Seattle to keep? Well, 5.4 says history, and before you start wondering how to get 40 percent of one wide receiver, that's simply the average number of receivers the Seahawks have kept when they reduced the roster to 53 players from 2002 through last season.
Here's the total number of wide receivers kept after the roster cut to 53 over the past 10 years:
|Mike Williams||Mike Williams||Nate Burleson||Nate Burleson||Nate Burleson|
|Sidney Rice||Golden Tate||T.J. Houshmandzadeh||Bobby Engram||Bobby Engram|
|Doug Baldwin||Deion Branch||Deion Branch||Deion Branch||Deion Branch|
|Golden Tate||Deon Butler||Deon Butler||Logan Payne||Ben Obomanu|
|Ben Obomanu||Ben Obomanu||Ben Obomanu||Jordan Kent||D.J. Hackett|
|Kris Durham||Courtney Taylor||Courtney Taylor|
|Nate Burleson||Darrell Jackson||Koren Robinson||Koren Robinson||Koren Robinson|
|Bobby Engram||Bobby Engram||Darrell Jackson||Darrell Jackson||Darrell Jackson|

|Maurice Mann*||Alex Bannister||Alex Bannister||Alex Bannister||James Williams|
|D.J. Hackett||D.J. Hackett||D.J. Hackett||Alex Bannister|

So who do you see the Seahawks keeping at receiver? It's the most compelling question for training camp outside of quarterback so let's spend some time this week breaking it down, focusing specifically on Butler and Williams.
