Extension tension: Chris Clemons' comparable
Then came his absence from the last week's mandatory minicamp, and it was clear that Clemons was dissatisfied.
It's not hard to understand why. Clemons is one of seven players in the league to total double-digit sacs in each of the past two seasons, and he's on a significantly smaller deal as he enters the final year of a five-year contract that totaled $18.5 million.
| Player | Team | Age | 2011 sacks | '10 sacks | Signed through |
| DeMarcus Ware | 29 | 19.5 | 14.5 | 2015 | |
| Deal, October 2009: Ware signed a big-budget, six-year contract extension in 2009, which included a $20 million signing bonus. That was part of $45 million in base salaries and bonuses scheduled for the first three years of a deal worth a maximum of $78 million. | |||||
| Jared Allen | 30 | 22 | 11 | 2013 | |
| Deal, 2008: The Vikings traded four draft picks -- including the No. 17 overall choice in 2008 to acquire Allen a sixth-round pick, then Minnesota signed Allen to a six-year contract that paid him $25 million in the first year alone, and will total $73.26 million if he plays it out through 2013. Allen will make $11.6 million this year and $14.3 million next year. | |||||
| Jason Babin | 32 | 18 | 12.5 | 2015 | |
| Deal, July 2011: Signed a five-year contract with Philadelphia in 2011, which totaled $28 million. It included more than $4 million in bonus money in the first year. Of all the players on this list, Babin might in fact be the most comparable to Clemons. Babin has thrived in a specific system, in this case Jim Washburn's defense first in Tennessee in 2010 and then in Philadelphia last year. Clemons has similarly thrived in a specific role in Seattle's defense. | |||||
| Tamba Hali | Chiefs | 28 | 12 | 14.5 | 2015 |
| Deal, August 2011: Hali was designated the Chiefs' franchise player, but signed a five-year deal worth $60 million with $35 million guaranteed. He is scheduled to earn $11.25 million in 2012, $12.25 million in 2013. | |||||
| Terrell Suggs | Ravens | 29 | 14 | 11 | 2015 |
| Deal, July 2009: Suggs had been designated the Ravens' franchise player in 2009, but the two sides agreed to a six-year contract that totaled $63 million and worth a guaranteed $38 million. | |||||
| Cameron Wake | Dolphins | 30 | 8.5 | 14 | 2016 |
| Deal, May 2012: Wake signed a four-year contract extension worth a total of $49 million with $20 million guaranteed. Wake will play the final year of his contract at a salry of $615,000 before the pay spikes beginning in 2013. | |||||
| John Abraham | Falcons | 34 | 9.5 | 13 | 2014 |
| Deal, March 2012: Abraham is more than three years older than Clemons, and as a free agent this year, he was able to secure a short-term deal at three years worth a total of $16 million. | |||||
| Trent Cole | Eagles | 29 | 11 | 10 | 2017 |
| Deal, March 14, 2012: Four-year extension, $48.525 million, $15 million guaranteed. Details. This came after Cole signed a five-year extension in 2006 worth $26.5 million. | |||||
